Alex Gogic- The Most Underrated Midfielder In The Scottish Premiership

There are some very good midfielders in the Scottish Premiership such as Callum McGregor, Scott Brown and Ryan Jack, who are always getting praise from the media, but there are also some very underrated players in the league who go under the radar due to the club they play for. Here, I will explain why Alex Gogic is one of the most undervalued players in the top-flight.

To many, Gogic may not be a very popular name, unless you live in Greece of course.

Alex is the son of Sinisa Gogic, who was a famous footballer for Olympiacos between 1997-2002. Growing up, Alex saw his father play and score in the UEFA Champions League as well as watching him lift the Greek Super Cup and The Greek Super League title.

Asking Alex about growing up being the son of a famous footballer.

He said: “Growing up and watching my dad play was amazing. Scoring goals, lifting trophies and making 75,000 people jump, crying from happiness and shouting your name. It would make me so happy. That’s what made me fall in love with the game from so young. He would take me training with him since young and sometimes I would sit next to the bench during the games! I was also lucky enough to lift few trophies by the age of 6. Hopefully my son will follow.”

Gogic started his career at Olympiacos CFP, where he worked his way from U10’s level all the way until the U20’s squad. He signed for Premiership side Swansea City in 2013, with an ambition of playing in the English Premier League. He helped Swansea win the Professional Development League Two Title in just his second season in England, which then allowed The Swans to move to the top-tier development league, where they played against some of the top talents in the country.

“Goga” joined Hamilton in 2017 as he went in search of first-team football. He originally started out as a centre-back during his first two years in South Lanarkshire, but since Brian Rice took over last February, Gogic has established himself as one of the most consistently solid midfielders in Scotland.

Sitting in front of the two centre back is where Alex plays to his best, with his duty being to intercept and break down counter attacks and also being able to slot in as a third centre-half when needed.

Speaking to Alex about what he thinks his best position is, he said:

” I think my best position in my opinion and what I like playing the most is defensive midfield. I’ve been playing this position most of this season and I feel like it’s brought the best out of me. I like watching N’Golo Kante and Sergio Busquets, and I try to learn what they do best. Busquets has been intercepting and helping the whole team for so many years, but I started to like Kante and what he was doing the year Leicester won the league. I could relate more to Kante as they are not always the team with a lot of possession and have to defend more often than Barca. “

His importance to the Hamilton is second to none. He averages 8.8 interceptions per game, has won 62.2% of his aerial duels, has a 62.5% slide tackle success rate and finally has an impressive passing success rate of 68.7% so far this season.

The 25-year old has started every single game this campaign for Accies, bar the one game he was suspended, and will be a key player for the remainder of the season as Hamilton aim to avoid the drop.

Alex has represented the Cyprus national side at under 19’s and 21’s level and surely its about time that Johan Walem calls the talented defensive midfielder up for his first cap.

Gogic is out of contract at the end of the season, and its fair to say that every Hamilton fan will be hoping that Alex signs a new contract. However, it would be no surprise to see a bigger club come and try to seal his services.

I couldn’t write a piece without asking the main man if he would be happy to stay at Hamilton beyond this season.

Gogic said: ” Of course, I am happy here. This is where I made my senior debut and I will forever be grateful! The players, the staff and the fans have always been great since i arrived 3 years ago. Regarding a new contract, that’s really in my agents hands right now. I don’t know what the future holds. I’m just focusing on performing to the best of my ability and helping the team to finish on a high and stay in the league.”
